RIBBON SUNRISE by PHOTOGRAPHER RICK FURMANEK

Having scouted where I wanted to shoot a sunrise in the Grand Canyon, I awakened to freezing temps and winds howling with gusts up to 40mph. Still, this was my only day left on the South Rim and I wanted to take advantage of it. I had settled on Yaki Point as my location for the shoot and I must admit I sat for a few minutes in the dark in my 4Runner checking and rechecking my resolve to brave the weather. I finally climbed out of the vehicle and proceeded down the trail to set up my shot. This was one of those times I wished I had sand bags with me to secure my tripod. The unexpected blasts of frigid air shooting out of the Canyon forced me to maintain a secure grip on my gear.

My determination paid off as I was treated to an intimate sunrise that offered a dozen or so different perspectives as the sun climbed off the horizon. This particular shot captured my attention as the fast-moving clouds provided a ribbon-like effect...

I've always had a passion for artistic expression with my camera. As an industry specialist in the mid-90's I served as the Operations Manager/Technical Trainer in the Apple Computer technical support division in Tempe, AZ, just when PowerMacs were hitting the scene. This exposure served to influence my move from film to digital photography. The Apple QuickTake was my first digital camera. From there I moved to Olympus and finally settled on Canon. Self-taught in both photography and digital processing, I count myself fortunate to have had access to Adobe Photoshop almost daily for 20+ years. I hope to always remain a student of the craft.
