While trekking summertime monsoonal thunderstorm development south of the Superstition Mountains in southern Arizona, this rainbow showed up just about where I expected it to be. And while the setting sun provided plenty of light to produce a brilliant and colorful bow, it also possessed enough energy to fuel a fast-moving storm cell just out of purview to the right of this image. With winds whipping us around and huge dust-coated droplets of water landing so hard that they almost hurt the skin upon impact, we scurried for the 4Runner about a half mile away, just barely making it to safety before the deluge hit us.
The Sonoran desert can be both mesmerizing and unpredictable in the same breath. It is captivating to the senses, but if given the opportunity, it will take you captive. Respect it, whether it respects you or not. Ref. 6453
