Description
OMINOUS by PHOTOGRAPHER RICK FURMANEK
Have you ever felt you were visiting another planet? The atmospheric conditions on this particular day back in July of 2011 become so volatile that it gave me some sense of what it might be like if I were on Mars. Even the rocks were difficult to discern as the shades of red and orange filled every nook and cranny of the Superstitions (Arizona) giving them an eerie feel that something big was about to happen.
I have battled off and on since 2011 whether to do anything with this scene or just leave it to the confines of my digital darkroom. I have visited it probably ten times or so over the years and was never fully satisfied, thus I would file it away. It is two images stitched together as the sky was just too big for a single frame. This week I've committed some of my down time from school determined once again to depict what I saw with my own eyes. It truly was otherworldly. This seems awfully close now. Yes, the wind, the lightning, the thunder and eventually the rains came and the dramatic colors vanished leaving no trace of their presence. Although things were a little greener and a little less thirsty, life quickly returned to as it was. Ref. 2733-2736
