THE DAY THE SKY SPLIT by PHOTOGRAPHER RICK FURMANEK
What started out as a normal summer afternoon's trek out into the Arizona desert in search of composition turned into a dangerously violent event. I had chosen this day to head down the Peralta Trail road. In typical fashion I opted to venture off the main road just to see where it would take me. I noticed skies continuing to build and grow darker to the northeast over Canyon Lake on the Salt River. I assumed that northeast was the direction the storm was headed ... away from me. I was dead wrong. Turning a deep green, the menacing clouds began to speed my way with the lightning right on their tail. The thunder provided perpetual echoes of cracking and booming. As I continued to shoot, heavy drops of rain and hail began to pelt me. Forced to retreat to my 4Runner I stared in amazement. It was a super cell right over me ... in Arizona!
Mind you, growing up in Oklahoma I've seen my share of violent weather. Living the desert southwest for three decades I've also seen plenty of monsoonal thunderstorms. This one was quite different. It was not to be taken lightly. Violent is almost an understatement.
To visually detail the uniqueness of this storm here is a shot I took when it was directly overhead. As it moved to the southwest the first layer of clouds seemed to 'unzip' and split into two cells. The sunlight reflecting off the clouds, the desert vegetation and Three Sisters in the Superstition Mountains offered a touch of color, adding to all the drama. Ref. 3262
