THE DAY THE SKY SPLIT by PHOTOGRAPHER RICK FURMANEK
What started out as a normal summer afternoon's trek out into the Arizona desert in search of composition turned into a dangerously violent event. I had chosen this day to head down the Peralta Trail road. In typical fashion I opted to venture off the main road just to see where it would take me. I noticed skies continuing to build and grow darker to the northeast over Canyon Lake on the Salt River. I assumed that northeast was the direction the storm was headed ... away from me. I was dead wrong. Turning a deep green, the menacing clouds began to speed my way with the lightning right on their tail. The thunder provided perpetual echoes of cracking and booming. As I continued to shoot, heavy drops of rain and hail began to pelt me. Forced to retreat to my 4Runner I stared in amazement. It was a super cell right over me ... in Arizona!

I've always had a passion for artistic expression with my camera. As an industry specialist in the mid-90's I served as the Operations Manager/Technical Trainer in the Apple Computer technical support division in Tempe, AZ, just when PowerMacs were hitting the scene. This exposure served to influence my move from film to digital photography. The Apple QuickTake was my first digital camera. From there I moved to Olympus and finally settled on Canon. Self-taught in both photography and digital processing, I count myself fortunate to have had access to Adobe Photoshop almost daily for 20+ years. I hope to always remain a student of the craft.
